Edinburgh: A Lost and Found Story in Waverley

I left my own backpack in Edinburgh's Waverley Train Station when we first arrived. We had too many things to lug with for the trip, from London to Edinburgh- two big full luggage, two backpacks, one camera bag, two girls and their bags. Some rubbishes in hand too, or kids' papers that they scribbled during train journey and insisted to keep/bring along. I can't remember for sure. It happened too often.

Sorry, I digress. Anyway, we only realised it after 3 or 4 hours later when we were settling down in our rented apartment in Cowgatehead. My heart sunk. Immediately, we dashed to the train station. I dashed, due to the urgency of the matter and the girls couldn't be speed up in view of the steep slopes and flights of stair. SC and the girls caught up with me from behind.

I went into several counters, from the Station's information counter to the station's reception, then I was politely directed to Virgin trains' (because that was service provider of the train we took) service counter. The officer asked the detail of the backpack, but all the sudden I could not tell anything about it- the brand, the colour and i had a red Ferrari cap attached to it! A somewhat distinctive lookout of the bag! I was panic, i was blackout; I gave a vague description of my bag. Maybe because of that, the officer was not much in pressing. Or could he had seen too many of such scatter-brains. But still tried very best to checked every single possibility, including with the cleaning crew. Not avail though. He then gave me the last hope to check with "left luggage and found property" counter of the Station. Again, the counter officer asked about the detail of the bag to verify the owner. With monotonous tone and no expression on his face, he went into the store/office (back of the counter) and brought out a familiar bag. It was my bag! And nothing missing from the bag. I had to hold my tear of gratefulness

Thank you was not good enough to articular my gratitude to him, whoever had contact with my bag and other staffs in the station had tried to help.

Covering an area of over 25 acres in the center of the city of Edinburgh, do you know that Waverley is the only railway station named after a novel?

Waverley Bridge, looking towards Market Street.

Waverley located right in the middle of Old Town and New Town of Edinburgh. A very good landmark to orientate oneself once arrive this historical city.

Now, if you have not been to Edinburgh... remember Waverley first then.

  1. What a humongous sigh of relief!! We left our bag on a Japan train once too because we forgot we put it in the overhead compartment and had to suddenly change train due to disruptions. Luckily we rushed back and managed to get it back in time before it left the station!

  3. Thank you for linking up on Travel Tuesday!

Good thing is was a lost AND FOUND story, and not just lost. I also had a lost and found experience in Japan where I left my pouch (with all my money and passport) on a bench in the park! But someone returned it to the lost and found counter. So I can imagine your gratefulness to find your backpack with all its contents intact. The world is full of kind souls.

  4. Whew! What a relief! I left my purse in the post office once, straight after I'd withdrawn our week's pay (back in the days before ATM's and EFTPOS), and some honest soul handed it in. Boy was I relieved!

  5. What a great ending! So relieved to read that your bag was found. I once left an iPad at our local airport and nearly cried with relief when it had been handed in, unharmed. There are some very nice people in the world, thank goodness!
