It was a fun morning, very much like a treasure hunt game- walking towards unknown based on the guided route.

Below are the map of walking trail of Ernest Zacharevic's Mural. I added Lorong Lumut where we parked our car and began our wander. Initially, the girls enjoyed it, soon after walking much, they started to lost the interest. Thank goodness it was a gloomy morning, not so much of perspiring and it was actually less grumpy of them, if I may add.
We did not cover all of them, for example "The Awaiting Trishaw Paddler" and "Children in the Boat" were too far to reach. Somehow, we missed "Broken Heart" too.

Peranakan homes are actually a combination of European, Chinese and Malay Influences. This type of architecture is normally called "Chinese Baroque" architecture as it is a mixture of Chinese and Europe building styles. Such a mixture show us the cosmopolitan aspect of Peranakan culture itself. - source.
I tasked the girls to look for same floor tiles design. Very quickly, they surrendered themselves.
Many of these tiles are of art nouveau Style characterised by delicate, graceful and sinuous lines with richly colored glazes. They were produced as stand-alone tiles or as vertical panels for use in entrance porches, hallways, washstands and courtyards. - source.

As I understand that, the ceramic tiles also usually placed on walls below the front windows on the ground floor facing the street. Flowers and geometrical designs are often used. Walking through the row of the shophouses, some of the entrances restored beautifully, some are awaiting for opportunity. I sense of happiness of the former and the sadness of the latter.
It was also eye-opening that, I could not find any identical entrance door, nor floor tiles.

ReplyDeleteAhem.. I totally missed the murals when I was in Penang. Hahaha.. I was so fixated on hunting down all the good food when in Penang that I didn't even realise there were murals to be hunted. Mural hunting sounds like a great way to burn off all those calories.. :p #MondayEscapes
