Pearl Beans (aka Cranberry Beans) and Corn Soup

Peeling off the pod of pearl beans are great for training toddlers' fine motors skill, as well as mathematic lesson for primary schooler- counting, grouping; addition and multiplication.

My daughters love the work involving these beans, I always get help volunteering in peeling off and extracting the beans. Little Bomber first laid her hands on the beans when she was about 3. She was probably attracted to the beautiful appearance of the bean pods.

They love to consume the soup that is boiled with these beans too.

As I surfing in the internet, it is also called cranberry bean,

Ingredients:
  • 200g of cranberry beans
  • 1 ear of fresh corn (or two, if you wish for more sweetness from the corn)
  • 250-300g of pork ribs
  • some red dates (optional) - Or carrot
  • 1500ml of water
  • salt to taste

Method
  1. Blanch the pork ribs in a pot of boiling water.
  2. Bring another pot of water to boil. Add in the pork ribs, cranberry beans, corn and red dates into boiling water.
  3. Once the pot is boiling again, lower the heat and simmer for at least 2 hours.
  4. Add salt to taste before serve.

The soup will be somewhat powdery, the beans are broken and soft after long hour of boiling.
Adding them to soups provides great nutrition and extra protein, and many people enjoy their nut-like flavor, which is somewhat subtle yet unique. - source

I love soup and often, soup are easily to be prepared. The combination of ingredients usually not difficult to remember... and can be agaration (gauge).

During weekdays, I have to prepare it early in the morning before head out to work. Once the soup is boiled for 30-45 minutes, my trusty Thermos Thermal Cooker will do the work (of cooking without heat) until we return to home in late afternoon. My daughters always look forward to a hearty soup in the evening once reach home for dinner. To me, soup is not only nourish their body, it is their pot of happiness too.

Very much as what my mum did to the family. Soup always make me heartwarming and healthy.
