We were on A87 road, on our way to Isle of Skye, from Fort William. All of us needed a loo break after stuck in the car for almost 2 hours.
Eilean Donan Castle is situated in Loch Duich near Dornie about 8 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh on the A87 road on the west coast of Scotland near the Isle of Skye. - source
As I was selecting photos to upload into the blog, I found my daughters' photos that were taken individually without any prior intention, but somehow merged seamlessly into one. I think I did a good job there ;p.
Anyway, like most attraction in Scotland, there is a visitor centre welcoming visitors. It comprises of a gift shop, a cafe and toilets. After the short toilet break, we had a late brunch in the cafe. The Driver needed to stretch his legs and arms too.
While we sipped coffee and chocolate milk in the cafe (and tapped onto the wifi of the cafe for ensuring the direction to the next destination), we got to enjoy another angle of the marvellous Castle!
Historically, the castle has had a rather chequered past. Originally built in 1220 by Alexander II as a defence against the Vikings, it subsequently became a stronghold of the Mackenzies of Kintail (later the Earls of Seaforth) who installed the MacRaes as hereditory keepers. Then in 1719, it was destroyed whilst acting as a garrison for Spanish Troops fighting for the Jacobite cause on behalf of the 5th Eart of Seaforth. Restoration work was only started two hundred years later and not completed until 1932. - more from here.
Due to time constraint, we did not take a tour inside the Castle. The admission for 2015 as follow (copied from Official web site for Eilean Donan Castle)
Adults | - £7.00 |
Concessions (Seniors Aged 60+) | - £6.00 |
Family (2 Adults + 3 Children Age 5-15) | - £17.00 |
Under 5s | - FREE |
Group Rate (min 12 persons) | - £6.00 |
BUT we did take lots of beautiful pictures with the Castle. It was a showering day, Mr Sun was just happened to pop by for our photo taking and wandering (and goofing). I was freezing cold actually. Runny nose and numbed fingers. But, you can't tell right?
The photo above was taken by our elder daughter.
So, tell me which is the best shot of the Castle from us?

Scotland is definitely on my travel bucket list. I love this castle. I saw a movie recently which featured it as the ancestral home (can't remember the name of the movie though!)
ReplyDeleteNice post!! This is really beautiful!! We've been there too! Have you seen that movie "Maid of Honor"? The castle was one of its locations!!!
